Action Alert – End Violence Against Women and Girls Internationally with I-VAWA

I received an email today from the Tahirih Justice Center, an outstanding non-profit organization dedicated to protecting immigrant women and girls fleeing violence, about critical upcoming legislation that every mom will care about.  The International Violence Against Women Act (I-VAWA), groundbreaking bipartisan legislation that will dedicate US resources and leadership to fight violence against women worldwide,  is likely be taken up by the Senate in the next few weeks.  (For detailed information about I-VAWA, click here.)

With the August recess, upcoming elections, and a packed legislative agenda, it’s crucial that we press Congress to vote on I-VAWA before year-end, so that protection of vulnerable women and girls not fall by the wayside.

Support from members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee—including Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN), Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA), and Senator Bob Corker (R-TN)—is key for I-VAWA to move forward. By reaching out to these Senators, particularly if you are a constituent, you can make a game-changing difference.

In less than 3 minutes, you can a) call-in; b) send a Facebook appeal; c) build the movement by telling your friends; d) transform the lives of women and girls facing horrific violence worldwide. Please see below for instructions and sample scripts.

Feel free to add additional reasons you care about ending violence against women. Also, if you can’t call Monday—still call! Anytime next week will still be within the critical window of opportunity we have to move the Senate to action on I-VAWA.

Take Foreign Language Out of the Doghouse

“Thousands of public schools stopped teaching foreign languages in the last decade, according to a government-financed survey — dismal news for a nation that needs more linguists to conduct its global business and diplomacy.”  So starts a recent NY Times piece.  It goes on to say only Chinese instruction has grown among languages in US schools.  The first fact – schools are dropping foreign languages at a rapid clip – alarms me.  The second – more students are learning Chinese – is inevitable.  Given the sheer numbers of Chinese speakers on the planet, more Americans need to meet them where they’re at.

There is much to say on school districts’ decisions to drop foreign languages – some say it’s due to budget shortages, and others claim it’s because of quality.  Here’s some coverage on it last week from my local paper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, which caused a bit of a stir.  Some school officials say we haven’t figured out how to effectively teach foreign languages to young learners, so rather than throw good money after bad, let’s eliminate the program.  Problem is, the problem won’t go away, and it certainly won’t be solved this way.   American students happen to fall toward the bottom of math rankings globally, too, but we’d never dream of eliminating math class because we teach it ineffectively, would we?  If we’re serious about competing in the global economy and if we want our children to be among those leaders, we need to figure out how to teach it effectively in American schools.  They’ll need to communicate with their fellow leaders, and only in English limits their options considerably.

In the meantime, here’s a website that’s lots of fun for the youngest kids and older ones, too.  What does a dog say in French?  Or a cow in Russian?  How about an ambulance in German?  Or a pig in Japanese?   Not only does vocabulary vary across languages, but so do sounds like beep, bow-wow and oink!  Learning another language gives us a whole new viewpoint on the world.

What Can Our Schools Learn from the Fins?

This six-minute BBC clip (BBC Finland\’s Education Success) contains some serious gems gained from learning about what makes some country’s education systems outstanding and why America’s schools have been dropping in global rankings.  Finland’s children have consistently performed at the top of international rankings year after year.  I highlight this trend in Growing Up Global and organizations like the Asia Society have been studying what works and implementing learnings in their network of internationally-focused U.S. schools.

Some of the success factors are distilled in the video clip:  Freedom to explore (hence, walking to school, or excursions for p.e. class), a relaxed, trusting environment (e.g., taking off shoes, good camaraderie among the children and with teachers), not tracking students as above or below standard, close parental involvement as supporters of the process not bullies or strangers of it, early foreign language learning, and especially… well-trained, multi-lingual, trusted teachers that students have a close relationship with.  Finnish students demonstrate high standards in core subjects, consistency of lessons across the country, diversity of learners and learning styles side by side (again, not tracking the top students in one class and the lower ones in another), and employers are finding these qualities useful in building a skilled workforce.

Of course, we face complex and some different issues in our struggling U.S. schools, but certainly we can learn much from successful examples.  What do you think?  Can U.S. schools embrace some of these approaches to improve the quality of education we give to our young learners?  And as parents, what should our role be?

Last night I met Connie Duckworth, founder of Arzu Rugs. In the Appendix of Growing Up Global I suggest Arzu among the beautiful ways to adorn your home and support gender equality, so it was very special to meet Connie passing through Philly. Arzu (meaning “hope” in Dari, and Farsi speakers will recognize this word too) creates sustainable means of income to break the cycle of poverty, utilizing beautiful hand-crafted rugs made by women in Afghanistan. Connie was inspired by the women’s story and founded the organization after 9/11/01 – yet another example of mobilization and hope after that tragedy. (See www.arzurugs.org.)

As we were talking, she mentioned good friends of hers that are Persian, like me. Turns out their cousins in Peru (!) are dear friends of mine, from my year living in Peru while I was in college. What a small world!

If you’ve seen the cover of Growing Up Global, you’ll notice the sunburst with the quote from Dr. Jane Goodall says: “fascinating ideas for giving young people opportunities to become truly global citizens.”  I was over the moon when Dr. Jane offered her feedback from reading a galley copy of the book.  Amidst her grueling schedule, travelling over 300 days a year, we managed to get a book to her while she waited for a flight at Heathrow airport, and she couldn’t have been more gracious and positive about it. This wasn’t the first time she’d heard of my project.  Our initial meeting took place on the Amtrak from Philadelphia to New York, four years ago.

We were on a full train, where the only open seats were the very last ones in the car.  These are the ones that look like a restaurant booth, with a table in between.  I thought I recognized the woman already in the seat across from mine.  I definitely knew it was her when, upon settling in, she took out a plush toy chimp from her bag (I think he’s “Mr. H”?) and placed it right on the table between us, just as I would place a magazine there.  At that time our eldest daughter was in seventh grade, concluding a Biography project – on Dr. Jane Goodall.  (I remember this because about half way into the ride I went into the ladies’ room to call Layla with the news: I excitedly whispered it and she screamed in return.)

A highlight of that fateful ride with the esteemed activist, scientist and trailblazer (who turned 75 earlier this year) and her capable right-hand person was the conversation we had around raising children to be at home in the world – to take responsibility, not live in fear, engage in making sincere connections, and embrace its beauty and possibilities.  She encouraged my dedication to the book.  She shared that indeed, the prime motivation of her work, including the work with wildlife, stems from her desire for peace in our world.  A society that respects its environment is much more likely to have peace.  Brutality to animals quickly spreads to fellow humans.  Take a look at her newest, heart-felt book, Hope for Animals and Their World.

Since that day I discovered a number of overlapping friends with the Jane Goodall Institute board and staff, particularly a graduate school mentor, Dr. David Shear, who recently stepped down as JGI’s Board Chair.  I’m honored to have a Growing Up Global gift basket included among the silent auction items at The 2009 Jane Goodall Institute Global Leadership Awards Celebration taking place at the Beverly Wilshire hotel near L.A. tonight.  I was told that only “items Jane loves” will be included in the auction.  Here’s a link to the invitation, with a Hollywood Who’s Who on the host committee, ranging from Barbra Streisand and Mary Tyler-Moore to Julia Louis Dreyfus, Ellen DeGenerus, and Ted Turner.

Kids can nip prejudice in the bud

Author urges fun approach to leading children past misinformation about other cultures

In 1979, when Iranian-born Homa Sabet Tavangar was a junior high cheerleader in Fort Wayne, Ind., a revolution erupted in the country of her birth.

Despite the fact that she was only a year when Tavangar and her family emigrated to the United States, societal ignorance pegged her as something she wasn’t.

Suddenly, she says, there was “prejudice and the misinformation and not wanting to admit that you’re from this hostage-taking, flag-burning country, which had absolutely nothing to do with who my family is and our reality.”

A key to nipping such uninformed denseness in the bud and broadening horizons, Tavangar says, is starting the education process early. Her new book, Growing Up Global: Raising Children to Be At Home in the World (Ballantine Books, $16), is a how-to guide. And many of the ideas put forth therein, budget-minded parents will be glad to know, can be implemented without travelling abroad.

“Focus on the things you love first,” the Philadelphia-based Tavangar says. “Don’t make this feel like homework. If you love sports, for example, use that angle with your kids. If your kids are on a soccer team, go on the Internet with your kids, go on the FIFA [international futbol] Web site, which has lots of fun things that draw you into the game and draw you into the world and that make you feel so connected. You can follow a player whose name you can barely pronounce. You can follow a few teams.”

Tavangar also suggests devoting a weekend to one particular country, and choosing activities — art, dance, dining, music — that evoke the country’s traditions. That’s especially easy to accomplish in a multiethnic city like Chicago, but Tavangar claims it’s possible almost anywhere if you’re willing to drive a bit.

“You can almost spin the globe and say, ‘Where do we want to go?’ Let’s go to Egypt or China or France or Lebanon or wherever it is,” she says. “Maybe you go to the museum for a certain exhibit. You go to the ethnic neighborhood. You go shopping and see the stores. You definitely eat a few meals around that culture. It can be a very fun thing, like a real adventure. And you can also anchor it around special movie screening or a concert.”

Just avoid making it school-like, she warns. Kids don’t want to feel like you’re jamming culture lessons down their throats.

“A couple of years ago, my daughters were both in middle school at the time and really getting environmentally aware and pushing recycling and environmental things,” Tavangar recalls. “I was at the video store and I saw ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ was on sale, so I picked it up and I thought, ‘Oh, this’ll be great. We’ll watch this at home with the kids.’

“We’d seen it once in the movie theater, and they just rolled their eyes, like, ‘Are you kidding me? This is the movie you brought for entertainment at home for us to watch together? This is school. I don’t want to watch a middle-aged man’s PowerPoint presentation.’ My husband did a lot better when he brought home ‘Fiddler on the Roof.’ ”

Wilmette resident Perry Yeatman, a well-travelled senior vice president at Kraft Foods, thinks Tavangar’s book is a boon to those who can’t haul their kids around the planet in the name of global immersion and enlightenment.

“The kids we’re raising today are the next generation of business leaders and politicians and doctors and scientists,” says Yeatman, the mother of two — including a 5-year-old daughter with multiple passport stamps. “All of those fields need a global perspective to be successful at this point.”

Tavangar’s tack, she says, is geared to “the average mom or dad.”

“What I love about this book is that it is practical, it is non-judgmental. It’s not saying, ‘Gee, you weren’t raised with a Ph.D. in international relations. How could you not be thinking about the world at large?’ It takes everyday occurrences and has tons of options for people that are free, that can be done from your home, that can be done in any community in America. And it makes them easy and practical and fun.”

Recently, Yeatman says, a friend wondered what type of birthday party to throw for her child. Nothing seemed original. Having just read Tavangar’s book, Yeatman suggested an Olympics-themed fete, complete with a parade of nations, physical challenges and a cake decorated with Olympic rings. In addition to being unique, it was relatively cheap to pull off.

Graduating to the next level of international involvement with kids is quite the opposite, admits Tavangar, who has traveled with her brood to Bolivia, Peru, West Africa and, briefly, Europe. Her 16-year-old, she says, just got back from an extended scholarship excursion to China.

“We have really made an effort. We’ve sacrificed financially in other ways so that we could do some travel with our kids,” she says.

“And they love it. They absolutely love it. I really think it’s sort of a muscle [to be used]. Most people can really enjoy what the world offers if you start getting used to it and exposed to it [early]. If you have no idea, that’s when it’s scary.”

Ten tips for raising globally aware kids

1. Keep the world at your fingertips. Purchase an up-to-date globe and keep it handy for easy reference and/or cover a wall near the kitchen table or other central location with an oversized, laminated world map.
2. See the world through movies. View and compare the stories of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Superman, Jungle Book and many more through movie versions from other countries and eras.
3. Get passports. Even if you have no intention or budget for international travel, possessing your own passports will put your family in the mindset of the possible, as a very physical reminder of your world citizenship.
4. Enrich your playlists and music collection. As kids’ become accustomed to musical diversity, they adjust to the various sounds, making the genres feel less “foreign.”
5. Find beautiful books. Vibrant coffee table and kids’ picture books can bring diverse circumstances, people and emotions to life, for all ages.
6. Make birthday parties global. When you’re ready to move beyond the Princess, Power Ranger or Pony party themes, consider choices derived from global celebrations: Bastille Day, Cinco de Mayo, Earth Day, Chinese New Year, the World Cup, Olympics, etc.
7. Spice up Thanksgiving and your take-out choices. Look to your cultural heritage (or a guest’s) or a favorite ethnic food style. Start slowly by using a new spice or herb, or add a new side dish. And don’t forget variations on leftovers: turkey enchiladas, green bean and rice pilaf, dumplings and piroshkies make the next day’s meal almost as exciting as traditional Thanksgiving.
8. Decorate the holidays in a new way. Decorations from Latin America, Russia, Asia and many other cultures are available in all kinds of mainstream stores. Kids might enjoy selecting an ornament from a favorite country, and then find out about what it represents.
9. Use soccer to go global. Pick an international team to follow based on your heritage, your friend’s, your favorite type of food, the language you want to learn to speak, your favorite jersey, or hundreds of other reasons — get creative! The FIFA Web site includes an interactive world map to help you learn about all the teams and member countries.
10. Expose children to foreign languages. There are lots of ways to do this, but start by making the effort to learn a few words in a foreign language with your kids — even if it’s learning how to say something mundane or silly like “toilet” in five languages! See if there are root similarities or other ways that languages relate.

Best MBA Schools Recognize a Global Perspective is Vital – Why Wait Until Grad School for Serious Training??

There’s a nice article by the Kellogg Business School at Northwestern University called: “Global perspective:  How Kellogg is shaping students into leaders who are ready to take on the world.”  It can be found at: http://tinyurl.com/globalKellogg.

This is a great pitch to convince smart people about the benefits of a Kellogg MBA.  I think it makes another case:  gaining a global perspective is a “pillar” of one’s education and this is really a life-long process.  

Explaining why it’s important to go global, Sunil Chopra a distinguished professor at the school, said:

“What you cannot do is sit in a corner and say, ‘I’m going to build a wall and what happens elsewhere is not going to affect me.’ Global is where the opportunities are.”

Exactly!  So, smart parents, how do you translate this at home?
